    Overview

Indacaterol acetate is the acetate salt of indacaterol, a long-acting β2-adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA). It is used as a bronchodilator for the maintenance treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

    Therapeutic class

Long-acting β2-agonist (LABA); selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. Chemical name: 5-[(1R)-2-[(5,6-diethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)amino]-1-hydroxyethyl]-8-hydroxy-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-one; acetic acid

    Molecular formula

    C26H32N2O5 | Molecular weight: 452.5 g/mol

    Appearance & solubility

Off-white to light yellow / cream-yellow powder. Freely soluble in N-methylpyrrolidone; sparingly soluble in dimethylformamide.

    Clinical applications

Long-term maintenance treatment of COPD. Administered via oral inhalation, formulated as a dry powder for inhalation (DPI).

    Mode of administration

    Oral inhalation (dry powder inhaler).

    Pharmacological effects

As a LABA, indacaterol stimulates adenylyl cyclase, which catalyses the conversion of ATP to cyclic-3′,5′-AMP. The resulting increase in cyclic AMP relaxes bronchial smooth muscle. When inhaled, it acts locally in the lung as a bronchodilator with a rapid onset and long duration of action.
