    Overview

    Amylmetacresol is an antiseptic used in throat lozenges and sprays for mouth and throat infections. It exhibits antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity by denaturing microbial proteins.

    Appearance & solubility

    A low-melting solid (a clear or almost clear liquid, or a colourless to slightly yellow crystalline mass when freshly prepared); may darken to dark yellow, brownish-yellow or pink on storage. Practically insoluble in water; very soluble in acetone and in ethanol (96%).

    Symptomatic relief of mouth and throat infections, in the form of lozenges.

    Mode of administration

    Oral, in the form of lozenges.

    Pharmacological effects

    An antibacterial and antiviral agent. It is also thought to block voltage-gated sodium channels in a local anaesthetic-like manner.
