    2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol (DCBA) is a chlorinated aromatic alcohol used as an antiseptic, particularly in throat lozenges and oral preparations.

    Clinical applications

    Used for its antibacterial, antiviral, and local anaesthetic properties. The local anaesthetic action is thought to be due to a reduction in sodium channel activity.

    Oral, in the form of lozenges.

    Pharmacological effects

    A mild, broad-spectrum antiseptic used mainly in throat lozenges to relieve sore throats and minor mouth infections by killing bacteria and certain viruses. It is thought to act by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and reducing sodium channel activity, which may provide a local anaesthetic and soothing effect on inflamed tissue.
